  • 20.5" (520mm) length
  • 2 3/4" (70mm) width

Use this precision made aluminum sanding block for putting a radius on a fingerboard or leveling frets.  With its heavy weight, extra thick external walls and double internal support, you can be confident that the radius and straightness will stay accurate for years to come.  Not effected by moisture or temperature like wooded radius sanding beams.

Uses standard 2 3/4" PSA longboard sandpaper rolls.

    Bow in Sanding beam

Posted by Donald on Feb 10, 2020

The machining of the interior of the sanding beam appears to be true and flat however the extrusion on the one that I received has a bow in it about 1/8 of an inch measured in the center. There is no way to reference the interior sanding surface with the exterior of the extrusion, so it makes it difficult to use a fence to guide the beam. It would be nice if on the ends of the beam, corresponding high spots were marked so that you could at least align those with the center of the fretboard. The response from customer support was “You will be fine to run it along one (side) of a fence since you will be sliding the sanding beam. Any deviation will even itself out since you are moving the beam.” However, if the deviation “will even itself out” then you are taking more material off the sides of the fretboard and you are not getting the true radius of the sanding beam, as a result the fret press caul will not seat the frets properly. I didn’t expect a precision edge on the beam, however a 1/8 inch bow over a 20.5 inch length of extrusion is pretty poor in my opinion. Typical acceptable tolerances for the straightness of aluminum extrusions are 0.012" per foot which would result in an allowable bow of .020 inches for this length of beam.

    Superb Radius Beam

Posted by Mark Merrill on Jan 14, 2020

Absolutely perfect milling and finish. Milled true and with a perfect radius throughout the length. Used my own shop made radius blocks for years. Decided to give this a try. Very satisfied with this superb product!

This is the nicest I’ve ever used. Extremely flat the entire length and the radius is perfect The price at Philadelphia Luthier is always the best.

I bought 4 of these beams, 7.25, 9.5, 12, and 16" ones. These are very well made, 2.5" longer than another Famous seller, about half their regular price and with the 15% discount cannot be beat.
