Fun and inexpensive experiment with P90 pickups. I needed a little boost from the bridge pickup as well as some clarity from the neck pickup which had A2 magnets. Settled on A5s in the neck pickup and A8s in the bridge. I was hesitant, thinking the A8s might only work for higher gain stuff, but they clean up really nice. Still have a couple sets of A4s to try when I get my tinker itch.

I did a test with a Seymour Duncan Custom 5 bridge pickup in a Les Paul Standard. Ordered a A2, A8 and C8 magnets. 1st thing I noticed is the A8 magnet has more pull. Much more than C8 just holding them using a steel ruler. Multimeter showed very little output change between them all but tone change was huge. A5 has a nice balanced tone and a bit scooped mids. I see why its used allot. A8 is like a C5 on roids. Bigger tighter lows and more highs but not piercing. The win is in the mids. Specifically low mids. Crushing. Musical mids not harsh. Very musical, vocal like. One issue is the pull. It needs to be set lower than other pickups. I set mine by ear. Every pickup has a sweet spot. Other observation. I found myself turning gain down on amp from 2pm to about 12:30. The mids it really works well using both pickups. I left a review of the C8 here. Worst of the bunch. Sterile and thin. Alinco has character and warmth. Wanna heat up your bridge pickup. Try an A8 magnet.
