A very difficult task made considerably easier.

I bought a JEM copy 15 months ago, and 'burned' through the frets, largely gone. I couldn't find anyone in Ireland who would put stainless steel frets on it. No point in putting nickel, I'd only get a year out of them. So I started to hunt for stainless steel (ss) frets. I was considering a fret-bending tool etc and was heading for a more substantial capital outlay in that department until I found I could get the ss pre-radiused (rounded to fit the camber of the fingerboard). Having bought the necessary tools, and in particular the Fret Tang Nippers for ss from here, I have made 2 successful refrets of guitars, for which it is likely I would not have been so successful without the pre-radiused ss frets and the tools I was advised of. I am grateful for the help I have received, good honest useful information even when it meant me spending money in some other direction, and would not hesitate to suggest to anyone considering an ss refret that this is a good place to start. I know that people advise that ss is harder on the tools than nickel, but I prefer it, there is less chance of getting it wrong. It's hard to mess a ss fret, whereas a nickel one could be gone wrecked in a moment's lack of concentration. Thanks to all concerned here for making a difficult task so much easier by sharing valuable experience and providing top quality equipment.
