    Telecaster Control Plate

This is such a great idea and I almost wish Fender thought of this. I was going to turn the control plate around and do the switch in the back thing. This Control Plate takes that away because of the movement of the volume control........... Thanks a lot Guys this was perfect............

Chrome Fender Telecaster control plate with modified volume control position

Posted by Doug H on Dec 22, 2025

This is something our old friend Leo should have done in 1950! It solves the annoying issue with the volume control's knob interfering with the pickup selector switch when the latter is in the bridge position. I disliked the stock setup so much that for a while I reversed the control plate to position the selector switch All the way aft (later I noticed some other Tele players had done this as well). It was a simple mod, the most difficult task having to lengthen one wire when reversing the pots. But I changed it back after installing a 4-way switch (where the neck and bridge pickups work in series to provide a thicker and more powerful tone similar to a Humbucker in switch position 4). All the new control plate's holes line up perfectly to those in my MIM Tele, and the chrome finish is identical to the original. So it only took a few minutes to install the new control plate. I have recommended this product to all my clients that play Telecasters.

    Tele control plate

Best thing ever to give a little more room between the switch and (in my case) tone knob (I have it reversed). Great value as well.

Tele Control Plate with modified volume control position

Afternoon all, Not that this is very important, but thought it might add to your reputation as a quality supplier. I did a quick comparison of Tele cavity covers. I was specifically looking for the ones where the volume pot hole is moved away from the switch. This is what I found looking at real suppliers (NOT Amazon, and StewMac doesn’t offer a cover with the offset pot hole and their cover with an angled switch is $25): Tele Cavity Cover Comparison or TCCC Manufacturer Length (inches) Width (inches) Thickness (inches) Attachment hole spacing Center to Center (inches) Attachment hole diameter (inches) Comments Fender (standard plate) 6.3 1.26 0.052 5.85 0.181 Measured 2 plates - used average Goldo 6.3 1.25 0.061 5.86 0.11 15% thicker than other two; pot holes are closer together than Phil LT&S Phil Luthier Tools and Supplies 6.3 1.26 0.051 5.83 0.18 Virtually exact match to Fender; PLT&S pickguard screws are also exact match to Fenders (sold separately) Three issues that will come up: 1) the Goldo is thicker and some people might not like that. I need to put it on a guitar and see how it feels against the pickguard; 2) the Goldo attachment hole diameter is much smaller. The Fender pickguard screws do fit, but there is no room to move the cover if not situated perfectly (and I’ve never seen a pickguard and cavity cover fit perfectly). 3) the Goldo pot holes are closer to each other (tone hole moved closer to vol hole, vol hole moved away from switch), so if there is a crowded cavity (like with an S1 switch or push-pull switch) this might make it difficult to keep the wires out of the way when closing up the cavity. Pricing (without shipping): Fender $16.99 (on sale, usually $20) Goldo $20.99 (All Parts, the exclusive reseller in US only offer the angled switch version – pricing is likely the same) Phil LT&S $15.95 When I need to buy these again, I will buy the Phil LT&S because of the quality (your location is also closer than Fender and delivery will be faster even using USPS). Happy Friday from a happy customer.

    Excellent

Good quality plate. It’s nice to have an affordable option for these style control plates again. The only companies I could find who make these style now are Callaham and Rutters & they are about double the price.
